How to Set Up a Business Address in Brisbane (Without Using Your Home)
If you run your business from home, it can feel risky putting your residential address everywhere – on ASIC, ABN Lookup, Google Maps and your website. This guide walks you through how a Salt Space Virtual Office solves that problem and how to update your registrations step-by-step.
Why many business owners avoid using their home address
In Australia, your business address is used in more places than you might realise. For companies and some ABN holders, address details can appear in public registers and online search tools. That means using your home can:
- Expose your residential location to clients, suppliers and strangers.
- Mix business and personal life – especially awkward if you ever move house.
- Make it harder to look professional if you serve clients outside your suburb or interstate.
- Create extra admin later if you need to update multiple platforms when you change address.
A virtual office membership at Salt Space lets you keep your home private while still meeting the rules for a physical street address where required.
What addresses your business actually needs (ASIC, ABN & Google)
Different systems talk about “registered office”, “principal place of business”, “main business address” and “address for service”. Here’s what they mean – and how a Salt Space Virtual Office fits.

| Where? | Address type | What the rules say (summary) | How your Salt Space Virtual Office helps |
|---|---|---|---|
| ASIC – Companies |
Registered office Principal place of business |
Must be a physical street address in Australia – not a PO Box. Official notices are sent here, and if you don’t occupy the premises you must have the occupier’s written consent. | Use your Salt Space Virtual Office address (Level 1, 888 Brunswick Street, New Farm QLD 4005 plus your Unique Office Number). Your membership includes a “permission to use address” document you can produce to ASIC if asked. |
| ABN / ABR |
Main business address Postal address (optional) |
The main business address must be the physical location where the business is carried on (not a PO Box). You can choose a separate postal address for correspondence. | List your Salt Space Virtual Office address as your main business address to keep your home private. You can keep using a PO Box or other address as your postal address if you prefer. |
| Google Business Profile | Business location | Google needs a real, verifiable location where you can show signage, operate during stated hours and, if applicable, meet clients. Most verifications now use video, not postcards. | Salt Space is a staffed coworking space in New Farm. With eligible virtual office plans , we help you set up signage and record your video verification on site so you can use your virtual office address for your Google Business Profile. |
| Clients, invoices & website | Contact / mailing address | Clients simply expect a professional street address on invoices, contracts and your website – especially if you sell to other businesses. | Use your Salt Space Virtual Office address consistently on your website, email signatures, invoices, social media and packaging instead of your home address. |
What a Salt Space Virtual Office solves for you
1. Stop publishing your home address everywhere
Replace your home address with a professional New Farm street address for clients, invoices, website, ASIC and ABN – all managed through your virtual office membership .
2. Have business mail received & scanned for you
Mail arrives at Salt Space, we email you a notification (with a photo) and you choose: collect in person or have it scanned and emailed as part of your Virtual Office service .
3. Be ready for ASIC, ABN & Google checks
Your Salt Space Virtual Office includes an occupier’s consent letter, a Unique Office Number and optional Google video verification support, so you are set up correctly from day one.
Step 1 – Set up your virtual office address at Salt Space
Before you update ASIC, ABN or Google, you need your new business address and documentation ready. The quickest way to do this is to start a Salt Space Virtual Office membership .
How to start
- Complete the Virtual Office set up form: Virtual Office Set Up Form .
- Pay your invoice (monthly, 6-monthly or annual options – no lock-ins or setup fees). Full pricing and inclusions are on our Virtual Office page .
-
We email you:
- Your Unique Office Number (for example “Office 12”)
- Your “permission to use address” letter for ASIC / ABR / IP Australia
- Our Google verification guide (if you’re using the address for Google Business)
- From here, you can start using the address immediately for your clients, invoices and website as outlined on the Virtual Office service page .
Step 2 – Update ASIC & ABN with your new business address
Once your virtual office membership is active, your next job is to update your official records so that your company or ABN points to Salt Space instead of your home.
For companies – Updating ASIC
- Log in to your ASIC portal (or ask your accountant / registered agent to help).
-
Lodge a change of address to update your:
- Registered office
- Principal place of business (if appropriate)
- Enter your new address exactly as provided on your Virtual Office documents , including your Unique Office Number.
- When ASIC asks whether the company occupies the premises, select “No” and record Salt Space Coworking as the occupier. Confirm you have the occupier’s consent (this is your permission letter).
- Submit the form and keep a copy of the confirmation for your records.
For all ABN holders – Updating your ABN details
- Go to the Australian Business Register (ABR) and log in to Update your ABN details.
- Find the field for Main business address.
- Enter your new Salt Space address, including your Unique Office Number from your Virtual Office pack .
-
Decide what to use as your postal address:
- Keep it as-is (PO Box or other mailing address), or
- Switch it to your Salt Space virtual office if you want all mail received there and processed under your Virtual Office membership .
- Save and submit your changes, then check ABN Lookup after a short delay to confirm the update.
Step 3 – Set up or update your Google Business Profile
With ASIC and ABN sorted, your last key step is making sure Google recognises your new address so that you can appear on Google Maps and in local search results. Your Virtual Office at Salt Space is designed with this in mind.
Using your Salt Space address for Google Business
- Go to Google Business Profile and sign in with your business Google account.
-
Claim or create your business profile, then:
- Enter your business name and category (e.g. “Accountant”, “Consultant”).
- Enter your Salt Space address, including your Unique Office Number, as your business location.
- Choose whether you are a “storefront” (clients visit you on site), “service area” (you visit clients), or a hybrid of both.
- When prompted to verify, select the video verification option (where available).
-
Book a verification session at Salt Space:
- Email work@saltspace.com.au to book a time.
- We’ll set up a desk with your business signage and provide our video checklist – included with eligible Virtual Office memberships .
- Record your video on your phone following the checklist (showing signage, workspace and that you control the business).
- Upload the video to Google and wait for their decision. If Google asks for a new video, you can book another time with us to re-record.
How your mail is received, scanned & forwarded
Once your address is live on ASIC, ABN, Google and your website, all business mail and packages addressed to your Unique Office Number + Salt Space address will arrive at our reception. Mail handling is a core part of your Virtual Office membership .
What happens when mail arrives?
- We receive your mail and log it under your office number.
- Within 24 hours, we send you an email notification with a brief description or photo.
-
You decide whether to:
- Collect it in person during staffed hours (Mon–Fri, 8am–5pm).
- Ask us to scan & email the contents (included as part of your Virtual Office service – within fair use limits).
- Use our optional mail forwarding add-on if you want items sent on to another address. You can purchase Mail Forwarding Credits here .
Why this works better than a PO Box
- You can use a real street address that meets ASIC and ABN “physical address” requirements.
- No more daily post office trips or guessing whether something has arrived – we email you when it does.
- You can keep travelling, moving house or working remotely while your business mail stays centralised at Salt Space.
- If you do need a PO Box, you can still keep it – but most business owners find the virtual office (plus optional mail forwarding credits ) becomes their single source of truth.
Quick FAQs – Business address & virtual office
Can I use the virtual office address on ASIC, ABN and Google?
Yes. Your Salt Space Virtual Office is a physical Brisbane street address with a Unique Office Number. We provide written occupier’s consent for ASIC, and it meets ABN “main business address” requirements. For Google, we support you with a video verification session so you can show signage and a real workspace when you submit your video.
Will my home address still appear anywhere after I switch?
Once you update ASIC, ABN and Google, your public-facing details will point to your Salt Space address instead of your home. If you previously used your home on your website, invoices or social media, you’ll need to update those manually too. You can use the address and format listed on the Virtual Office page .
What if I cancel my virtual office – do I lose everything?
If you cancel, you’ll need to update your address everywhere again (ASIC, ABN, Google, website, invoices etc.) before your membership ends. We’ll continue to handle any mail that arrives during your notice period and can forward items using Mail Forwarding Credits . Full terms are outlined in our Virtual Office information and Terms & Conditions.
Can I meet clients at Salt Space using my virtual office?
Yes. Virtual office members receive discounted meeting room and hot desk bookings, so you can host clients in New Farm when needed while keeping your home strictly personal. Details of these discounts are listed on the Virtual Office page .
Is mail forwarding included, or is it an extra?
Mail handling (receiving, notifying and scanning) is included in your Virtual Office membership . Mail forwarding is an optional add-on, charged per item using Mail Forwarding Credits , so you only pay for forwarding when you actually need it.
